Apple have confined all the leaks, which were pretty obvious in the first place. Changing things up Apple are releasing two new iPhone’s with one being the expected upgraded version of the iPhone 5 that is dubbed the iPhone 5S and as expected the iPhone 5C.-

iPhone 5C

When Apple release a new iPhone they drop the price of the previous gen device, however this time around they are releasing a new device that will take the same price we would have expected the iPhone 5 to drop too and the iPhone 5 itself is being discontinued.  So let’s take a look at the specs which are very similar to the current iPhone 5.

  • 4-inch Retina Display
  • Unibody polycarbonate design
  • A6 Processor
  • LTE/3G
  • Bluetooth/WiFI a/b/g/n
  • 8 Megapixel camera with BSI

The new iPhone 5C  pretty much has the same internals as the iPhone 5. This time around it will be available in multiple colours which are blue, white, pink, yellow and green and will come in both 16 and 32GB storage sizes. Along with the colours we have a new shift in design. This time the housing will be made of Polycarbonate. Availablity for the iPhone 5C is set for September 20th and is available for Pre-order on the 13th.

iPhone 5S

The next iPhone is the iPhone 5S as again we expected it too be, but let’s take a look at the specs that the new device will offer and see if it is a worthy upgrade or introduces any new features.

iPhone5s_Gld_iOS7_PRINT

  • 4-inch Retina Display
  • A7 64-bit processor
  • M7 Motion co-processor
  • OpenGL 3.0 ES support
  • 8 MP camera
  • Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi b//g/n
  • 3G and LTE support

The paper specs are impressive but let’s break down the new iPhone 5S a little more and see what each new feature has to offer.

A7 64-bit processor

The new processor is 64-bit and offers twice the performance of the previous generation chip. This confirms that iOS 7 will be 64-bit compatible. Don’t worry however as the iPhone 5S will still support 32-bit apps. The graphics which now supports OpenGL 3.0 ES will offer up to 56x the performance compared to the iPhone 5.

M7 Motion co-processor

The M7 chip will continually measure motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. The purpose of the chip is to offer more accurate motion data for what Apple are calling the new generation of health and fitness apps. The hardware includes some software additions such as a new CoreMotion API for developers.

Camera

The new camera inside the iPhone 5S has the same 8MP as before but now we have a a 15-percent larger sensor along with a aperture of f/2/2. This should allow in more light giving better quality photos but also increase low-light quality photos even more. We also now have Dual LED flash that feature two different colour temperatures with each LED, this should give better tone to images that use the flash.

iPhone 5S camera
The software side of things include burst mode, which allows the user to take up to 10 shots a second while pressing the shutter button. Video recording now includes Slow-motion which records 720p video @ 120fps.

Home Button/finger print sensor (Touch ID)

iphone 5s home button

We now have a new home button that includes a nice finger print sensor which is being dubbed Touch ID. The 500ppi sensor pretty much replaces the pin/passcode lock if the user wishes to use it. It is completely built into iOS 7 and allows the user to unlock the device, sign-in to iTunes and pruchase content. It supports multiple fingerprints and as such technically supports multiple users as well.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5S start along side the iPhone 5C on September 13h and arrives September 20th  in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the UK. It comes in 3 different colours (image below) and will be available in 16/32/64GB storage options. Check out the press release’s for both devices below for more information.

CUPERTINO, California—September 10, 2013—Apple® today announced iPhone® 5s, the most forward-thinking iPhone yet, featuring an all-new A7 chip, making iPhone 5s the world’s first smartphone with 64-bit desktop-class architecture for blazing fast performance in the palm of your hand. iPhone 5s redefines the best smartphone experience in the world with amazing new features all packed into a remarkable thin and light design, including an all-new 8 megapixel iSight® camera with True Tone flash and introducing Touch ID™, an innovative way to simply and securely unlock your phone with just the touch of a finger. iPhone 5s comes with iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone, engineered for 64-bit technology and featuring hundreds of great new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop®, enhanced Photos, Safari®, Siri® and iTunes Radio℠.

“iPhone 5s is the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world, delivering desktop class architecture in the palm of your hand,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5s sets a new standard for smartphones, packed into its beautiful and refined design are breakthrough features that really matter to people, like Touch ID, a simple and secure way to unlock your phone with just a touch of your finger.”

The all-new A7 chip in iPhone 5s brings 64-bit desktop-class architecture to a smartphone for the first time. With up to twice the CPU and graphics performance, almost everything you do on iPhone 5s is faster and better than ever, from launching apps and editing photos to playing graphic-intensive games—all while delivering great battery life. Apple also engineered iOS 7 and all the built-in apps to maximize the performance of the A7 chip. iPhone 5s is the best mobile gaming device with access to hundreds of thousands of games from the App Store℠, the A7 chip’s 64-bit architecture and support for OpenGL ES version 3.0. iPhone 5s delivers incredibly rich and complex visual effects, previously only possible on Macs, PCs and gaming consoles.

Every iPhone 5s includes the new M7 motion coprocessor that gathers data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass to offload work from the A7 for improved power efficiency. Developers can also access new CoreMotion APIs that take advantage of M7, so they can create even better fitness and activity apps that go well beyond what other mobile devices offer. The M7 motion coprocessor continuously measures your motion data, even when the device is asleep, and saves battery life for pedometer or other fitness apps that use the accelerometer all day.

iPhone 5s introduces Touch ID, an innovative way to simply and securely unlock your iPhone with just the touch of a finger. Built into the home button, Touch ID uses a laser cut sapphire crystal, together with the capacitive touch sensor, to take a high-resolution image of your fingerprint and intelligently analyze it to provide accurate readings from any angle. Setting up Touch ID to recognize your fingerprint is easy, and every time you use it, it gets better. The Touch ID sensor recognizes the touch of a finger so the sensor is only activated when needed, preserving battery life.
