Samsung unveil 108-megapixel smartphone camera sensor

Samsung is stepping up their mega-pixel game and bringing to market a 108-megapixel 1/1.33-inch ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor. Obviously such a small sensor with so many pixels, straight up 108MP shots, while possible, aren’t going to be the main point. Using Samsung’s tetracell tech the sensor will couple 4 pixels together and provide a 27MP photo, so still pretty beefy.

Video side of things gets up 6K (6,016 x 3,384), recording @30fps. Probably not a resolution most are that interested in, it may allow for some interesting zoom/stabilization features for 4K video (potentially).

Samsung has already partnered with Xiaomi for the upcoming camera sensor, which should be included in the Redmi smartphone. It will be interesting to see how it performs when it does arrive.
